studio irvine has designed a dustpan & broom set for japanese brand MUJI that’s both functional and looks good. starting from the gesture to pick up and contain, the shape was born spontaneously, generating a product with a simple yet precise aesthetic that adds a design-minded touch to an everyday chore.

milan-based architecture and design studio irvine specializes in product design, art direction architectural spaces in which there is a specific research on matter and surfaces. designer marialaura rossiello irvine, who runs the practice, explains the concept behind this latest undertaking: ‘simplicity, essentiality and being part of an already functional system: these are the keywords that led me in the design of our last project for MUJI’.
the dustpan & broom design for MUJI was informed by a global analysis on how the cleaning tool is used in different cultures: whether in large or small spaces, outside or indoors. the final set can be used both indoors and outdoors, and it can pick up more thanks to a deeper dustpan design. in addition, the set looks good enough not to hide away in the cupboard.
‘the sense of my work as designer, never as much as in this project, has been realized: design a popular object for everyday use with an accessible prize. I like thinking that this project gives dignity to an object that usually we hide. dustpan & broom can be shown, instead,’ continues the designer.
