Kentucky lawmakers addressing rising motor vehicle tax bills

State lawmakers have filed multiple pieces of proposed legislation to address rising motor vehicle tax bills driven up by pressure on the used car market.

The motor vehicle tax rate has not changed, but supply chain issues disrupting the production of new cars are also causing used car prices to skyrocket. That, in turn, is creating higher assessments on vehicle tax bills.

"People are going crazy about their car tax going up," said Rep. Kevin Bratcher, R-Louisville, who is co-sponsoring two bills to address the problem.

In the meantime, car owners can always go to their local property value administrator's office to have their vehicle's value lowered based on mileage and other factors.

"I always encourage people, before you ever pay a tax bill, especially on a vehicle or a boat, come in and let us look at it," said Barbara Winters, the Oldham County PVA.
